My Story!

Hello everyone! Thanks for checking this out! I am new to blogging as well as the DOC so bare with me while I get the hang of this! I am Robyn and I'm 22 years old.Ive been a T1 for 14 years. I was MDI  then pumping and now MDI again. In the beginning i was in good control, went to D Camps, and really had any complaints. Just your average kid with some extra responsibilities. Well to make a long story short I became a teenager in poor control letting my pump do all the work. Also i rarely tested ever. I wanted independence and that included independence from diabetes as well. I ended up being taken in an ambulance from school and admitted for DKA. Needless to say my pump was taken away. Since then im back and forth.Sometimes doing great others days well not so much. I recently got health insurance back and I am having the basic diabetes blood work done. To be honest im freaking out! Is it wrong of me to be afraid to see my results because Im afraid that my days of uncontrolled diabetes have caught up with me? I know better. I know that in order to stay on top of it I need to have it done, Anyone else get the blood work jitters?

PS Everyone who took part in Diabetes Art Day , what fantastic entries!!!

  1. Hi Robyn-

Welcome to diabetes blogging! It is very common for you to get the blood work jitters. I get the jitters at result time. Remember everyday is different and baby steps! I'm so proud of you!

  3. Robyn, I'm like you. Sometimes I don't want to open the letter from my endo in case she says something about my cholesterol count or my A1C. And she's a great endo. Better to know the results and act on them. Treat them as information, not a verdict on what you may have done. As you know it's a lousy disease.

Welcome to the DOC. I added your blog to Diaboogle. I wish I could that you'll get a huge increase in traffic. But it's still way underused. Oh well.

  4. Robyn: First of all, welcome to the DOC! Great to have your voice and story out here in these crazy waters... I'm like you, as far as the teen years and the "rebellious streak" where I rarely tested. Didn't pump then and didn't ever officially hit DKA, but not great years. I'm really grateful to have found the DOC to make friends and help keep myself accountable as far as D-Management. And yes, still have those Endo jitters before, during, and even after in getting back on track.

  5. Robyn,

Welcome to the DOC. I look forward to reading your blog posts and learning more about you. I used to get jitters about blood work, but now I don't so much. It is what it is. I see the numbers and then I make adjustments from there.

  6. Welcome to the collective community many refer to as the D-OC or DOC which stands for Diabetes Online Community. As with Bernard, I agree this disease stinks and with any chronic disease, any human being will eventually suffer burnout. Don't view that as "falling off the wagon" or anything pejorative, but simply part of dealing with a CHRONIC disease. As Wil Dubois likes to do, celebrate your failures too (see http://goo.gl/JhXxV for more background) -- I try to use them as motivation for seeing where I've come from!
